Project Background: This project is part of the Emergency Supply and Storage Project was approved by Council. Click here to learn more about the project and November 2007 Ballot Measure. The project includes the installation of three new wells, rehabilitation of two existing wells, rebuilding of the Mayfield Reservoir Pumping Station and construction of a water storage reservoir at El Camino Park. Pursuant to CMR:371:09, this project will construct two new wells to ensure water system reliability. Scope:  
The City of Palo Alto is beginning construction of two emergency supply water wells that will be connected to the City’s water distribution system. Once completed, these wells will supply water to the City’s distribution system during emergencies that disrupt the normal water supplies. The two new wells will be located at Eleanor Pardee Park adjacent to Center Avenue and at the City’s Main Library/Community Gardens on Newell Road.

Project Schedule:
  Construction of the wells will begin in late October 2009 and is expected to be completed in mid-May 2010.

Tentative schedule of this project is as follows:

Starting in late October or early November the wells will be drilled in a continuous operation over a two week period. The drilling must be done in this manner to protect the structure of the well hole and avoid possible contamination of the water source. During the drilling operations, temporary noise barriers will be installed to reduce noise impacts to the adjacent properties.

Upon completion of the well drilling, new equipment will be installed to connect the wells to the City water distribution system. This work will be limited to the hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

During the construction there will be temporary changes to accommodate the construction activities. Some of the changes that will occur include:
Parking at the Main Library will be temporarily impacted during drilling, due to the need to locate equipment in several spaces adjacent to the drilling site.
