The City of Palo Alto released the Draft Environmental Impact Report for the Stanford University Medical Center Facilities Renewal and Replacement Project (SUMC Project) for a public review period beginning on May 20, 2010 and concluding on July 27, 2010.

A City Council meeting to introduce the Draft EIR will be held on May 24, 2010 at 7 PM, City of Palo Alto Council Chambers.
The SUMC Project includes demolition, replacement, and expansion at the Stanford Hospital and Clinics, the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, and the Stanford University School of Medicine to meet State mandated seismic safety standards (SB 1953) and to address capacity issues, changing patient needs and modernization requirements. The renovation and expansion project, which would be constructed over a 15-year horizon, would demolish approximately 1.2 million square feet of existing buildings at the SUMC Sites and construct nearly 2.5 million square feet of hospital, clinic, and research facilities, for a net increase of about 1.3 million square feet of hospital and clinic uses (research space would not increase). In addition, other existing buildings would be renovated to meet seismic standards and approximately 2,053 net new parking spaces would be added to the sites.

The Draft EIR will be available on the City’s website at www.cityofpaloalto.org/sumc, at the Palo Alto Main Library (1213 Newell Road) and at the City of Palo Alto’s Development Center (285 Hamilton Avenue, First Floor). Copies of the Draft EIR will be made available on loan from the Department of Planning and Community Environment (250 Hamilton Avenue, Fifth Floor) during normal business hours.

Members of the public may submit written comments on the Draft EIR during the public review period and no later than July 27, 2010 to the following contact:
