Utility Safety Information

SAFETY IS OUR TOP PRIORITY and we want to ensure that you and your family know how to safely respond to common household situations and potential emergencies. Here are our top three safety tips for you, along with additional information and factsheets listed below.

  • WHO TO CALL IN AN EMERGENCY:
    • 9-1-1 for emergencies
    • Electric Outage: (650) 496-6914
    • Water, Gas, Wastewater Outage:  (650) 329-2579
  • ASK FOR ASSISTANCE BEFORE ADJUSTING UTILITY METERS AND VALVES

If you need your water, natural gas or electricity turned off at the meter for any reason; avoid problems by FIRST calling the City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU) at (650) 329-2579, 24 hours a day. Remember, all utility meters and valves are City property and shouldn't be tampered with.

Avoid costly mistakes, such as digging into buried utilities, by calling Underground Service Alert (USA) at 800-227-2600 or dial 811 two working days prior to digging in your yard.
